Laem Chabang Port Phase III will place it in a better position to accept the future demands of international sea freight and transportation industries. This expansion will see the creation of a deep seaport and many other facilities including the implementation of a single rail transfer operator (SRTO), the construction of a larger Port A, and the renovation of many facilities so as to alleviate internal traffic problems ranging from networking to transportation systems. The renovations and expansions of the Laem Chabang port will better prepare it for linkage with habour-external transportation systems and an increased volume of various shipping vessels.
The Laem Chabang Port is located in the Thung Sukhla subdistrict of the Sriracha district in Chonburi.
The Laem Chabang Port is a deep-sea port built for the transportation of international cargo, and occupies 1,015 hectares (2,506 acres, 6,340 rai) of area, and built the Laem Chabang Port Phase I and Phase II which offer the following terminals and berths:
11 container berths (A0, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, C1, C2, C3)
1 cruise/passenger and/or Ro-Ro terminal (A1)
1 Ro-Ro berth (A5)
1 container and general goods Ro-Ro berth (C0)
1 general bulk goods terminal (A4)
1 repair and maintenance shipyard terminal
Remarks: excluding terminal D which is under construction, the first phase is estimated to open in mid-2018
Presently, as of 2015, over 7 million containers and 1 million cars are transported through the Laem Chabang Port on a yearly basis. This means that Laem Chabang functions at about 70% of the approximately 11 million containers and 2 million cars which are shipped in the world’s largest port.
To increase container throughput from 7.7 million containers per year to 18.1 million containers per year
To increase the number of cars shipped via Laem Chabang from 2 million cars per year to 3 million cars per year
To increase the number of container shipments via railway from 7% to 30%
The components, steps and points of Laem Chabang Port Phase III include:
Construction of 4 new container berths (E1, E2, F1, F2) increasing throughput to 7 million containers per year.
Construction of a further Ro-Ro terminal with a throughput of 1 million cars per year.
Construction of a costal terminal with a throughput of 1 million containers per year.
Phase II of the SRTO
Renovation and automation of current systems to allow for up to 4 million containers per year via SRTO
The anticipated year of completion is 2025 (slowest), and current construction plans are divided into a 5-year plan for infrastructural implementations (2018 – 2023) and a 3-year plan for the construction and installation of transportation accessories (2022 – 2025).
