The Eastern Economic Corridor Office of Thailand (EECO) welcomed a delegation from Guangdong Province, People’s Republic of China, led by Mr. Kajtiti Wiwatwanont, Consul-General in Guangzhou, during a visit to the AIS EEC (Evolution Experience Center) located within the Eastern Economic Corridor of Digital (EECd) on 12 May 2026. The visit aimed to explore opportunities for cooperation in the digital economy, intelligent industry development, and high-tech investment between Thailand and the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).
The delegation comprised senior officials and representatives from government agencies responsible for industry, science, technology, and investment promotion from key GBA cities, including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, and Zhaoqing, as well as representatives from Thai and Chinese media organizations.
The GBA is recognized as one of the world’s most significant economic and innovation hubs, with a combined GDP exceeding RMB 15 trillion (approximately USD 2.2 trillion). China is actively transforming the GBA from the “world’s factory” into the “Silicon Valley of Asia” through the advancement of high-tech industries, artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, intelligent robotics, the digital economy, and future industries under the “AI+” and “New Quality Productive Forces” strategies.
During the visit, the delegation received a briefing on the development direction of the EEC and EECd, Thailand’s strategic platform for driving digital industries and an innovation-based economy. Key focus areas include Data Centers, Cloud Services, AI, Smart Electronics, Smart Cities, and advanced technology ecosystems designed to support investment from leading global companies. In addition, the delegation attended a briefing on the telecommunications industry landscape delivered by Mr. Phuchong Charoensuk, Enterprise Product Marketing Manager, AIS Business.
Both sides also discussed potential areas of cooperation between the EEC and GBA, particularly in industrial digital transformation, AI and intelligent robotics development, high-tech supply chain connectivity, joint research and development initiatives, and talent development in technology and innovation to strengthen the region’s long-term competitiveness.
In addition, GBA representatives expressed strong interest in expanding collaboration with Thailand’s EEC across multiple sectors, including start-up and Smart City development with Guangzhou, AI and OpenHarmony system cooperation with Shenzhen, business matching and vocational education with Zhuhai, and robotics and hydrogen energy collaboration with Foshan. Discussions also covered opportunities to promote investment in semiconductors, intelligent industries, and the green economy from various GBA cities into Thailand.
The visit reflects the strong and longstanding relationship between Thailand and China and marks another important step in advancing regional cooperation in the digital economy, future industries, and innovation through enhanced connectivity between the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) and the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), both of which play strategic roles in shaping Asia’s future economy.
